I was reading astrologer Karen Christino’s blog about Jackie Kennedy Onassis, in which she talked about the path of least resistance in life. Instead of pursuing a career in journalism or publishing, Jackie married into the wealthy Kennedy family. It was expected of her to make a good marriage and she became a glamorous ornament for a US senator and future president. She was used to a comfortable lifestyle and wanted security. Of course, she didn’t see the obstacles and tragedies that unfolded down the road. It wasn’t quite so easy after all. She would have to be brave, stand tall and deal with it.
When we are young, most of us women have some kind of choice to make. Things have changed and today women have more freedom. But there is always the option of getting married and having a baby. Some women still want that. I got married young, because I thought I met the right fellow. Even though I wanted to work and become a successful artist or designer, I still wanted babies, sooner than later. I was a Cancer lady who loved babies, family, cooking and a happy home life. Like most women in the 1970s, I wanted it all.
The path of least resistance for me was, meeting a guy who was handsome, fun and a good provider. Not a drug user or a criminal. Clean cut Capricorn. He seemed like the right one. It was too easy, but how was I to know? I figured I was making a sensible choice. The path of least resistance. He came along just when I had decided not marry until I was at least thirty. The universe said, is that so? Well, here try this on for size. I changed direction so fast it would make your head spin. I’ve met many women who did the same thing. By the time I was thirty I was married with two beautiful children and a nice house, but wondering if I had made a mistake. Saturn was transiting into my 7th house and square to his natal place, go figure.
So, back to the main point. I wasn’t going to use my life as an example but there it is. I did not have good advice. Nobody stopped me. We don’t know if we are making the best choices. If we could only have enough sense to look ahead a little and see that the path of least resistance may be stifling or boring. If we could only have parents and teachers who point us in the right direction or give us the best advice. They too have made choices. And mistakes.
A great metaphor is the yellow brick road. It goes in several directions but you still end up at the Emerald City. Dorothy: Now which way do I go? Scarecrow: Pardon me. That way is a very nice way. Or it’s pleasant down that way too. (Pointing in both directions) Of course, some people do go both ways! –The Wizard of Oz.
Edgar Cayce said there is no right way or wrong way. When you make a choice, it will take you down a certain path. You will still learn things. If you choose differently, you will go in a different direction but nothing is ever wasted. In fact, in spite of my choice, after my marriage I began to have revelations, new ideas and an expanded interest in astrology. My husband didn’t go for this at all but there was no stopping it. It would have happened whether I was married or not.
